Mandy Moore – Actress
As an actress, Many Moore plays the matriarch of a quite colorful family. Little did we know that her real one isn’t that far off too. She was born in April 1984 and started getting into acting by the late ‘90s. Her first project was Street Rats in 1996.
When she was close to 23 years old, she found out that her mother was having an affair with a woman, planning to leave her father. It wasn’t an easy thing for their family to get over; however, with love and effort, they’re now all happy. In turn, both her brothers also came out!
Jodie Foster – Actress
In the late ‘90s, Jodie Foster’s brother, Buddy, published the Foster Child: A Biography of Jodie Foster book where he shared his family’s secrets, including the fact that they were mostly raised by two mothers. Apparently, their mother, Evelyn Ella Almon, was in a relationship with a woman named Josephine.
No wonder Jodie felt so comfortable coming out herself in 2013. She’s now happily married to Alexandra Hedison, with whom she raises two children. She is also working on a new film, called The Mauritanian, where she’ll star alongside Shailene Woodley and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Amy Adams – Actress
Looking at her now, we’d never have been able to guess about Amy Adams’ upbringing. She was raised in a Mormon family, with her father in the army and her mother looking after their eight children. Amy was the middle child, between her four brothers and two sisters.
When her parents split up, her mother moved in with her female partner. She also apparently became a professional bodybuilder. Despite the difficulties, they worked their differences out and are now as happy as possible! In 2021, we’ll be seeing Amy in three films, including The Woman in the Window.
Kendall and Kylie Jenner – Influencers
This may not come as a surprise given how much of an influential family the Jenners are, but that’s mostly because Caitlyn Jenner is one of the two parents. Before transitioning and becoming one of the best-known transgender female icons in the world, Caitlyn was a well-known decathlete and reality TV star.
She was able to be truthful to her family after her transition. It wasn’t easy, but they eventually accepted her. In the meantime, her daughters accomplished great things, with Kyle launching Kylie Cosmetics, and Kendall has become a worldwide known model.
Rene Russo – Actress & Former Model
She may now be an A-list celebrity with a $40-million fortune, but things weren’t easy for Rene Russo growing up. She doesn’t often talk about her childhood, but whenever she has, she’s revealed small and incredible details. In an interview in ABC, Good Morning America, Russo shared some quite interesting experiences.
Her father left her family when she was a toddler. She was since raised by her mother and her female partner. Whenever she speaks about it, she does so with gratitude and love. Russo’s latest acting project was a brief appearance on Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
Ally Sheedy – Actress
According to her interview on Windy City Times, Ally Sheedy may not be part of the LGBTQI+ community herself, but she has every reason to be involved with it. After all, both her son and her mother are part of it. Her mother and father split up when she was 9, but she was too young to understand the situation completely.
Today, she’s more than accepting of her mom’s orientation and her son, who's a transgender man. We’ve known Sheedy from movies like The Breakfast Club and Short Circuit. However, the last time we saw her acting was in 2019 on an episode of the SMILF series.
Ana Matronic – Singer
In case anyone has ever wonder what Ana Matronic’s connection to the LGBTQI+ community is, other than being one of the Scissor Sisters’ lead singers, here’s the answer: her father broke up with her mother when she was three years old. Eventually, she found out that he was gay.
When she was a teenager, she decided to move closer to her dad, who had contracted HIV. Unfortunately, he passed away when she was 15. Once she was older, Ana started performing as a female drag queen, which lead to the formation of her band. The last time we saw her was in 2020 on a Drag Time with Heklina episode.
50 Cent – Rapper, Actor & Businessman
For someone so open about his life, we didn't expect there to be any surprises about 50 Cent. It turns out that 50 Cent is full of them. According to the Pride website, his mother was a lesbian. Unfortunately, she passed away when he was just 8 years old.
He was too young to even begin to understand the situation. Nevertheless, once he was a bit older, his grandmother, who raised him, explained everything, and in turn, he embraced his past. According to IMDb, he’s currently working on Den of Thieves 2.
Liza Minnelli – Actress, Dancer & Singer
When speaking of Liza Minnelli’s family, it’s safe to say that Judy Garland, her mother, is the subject of talk. However, here, we’re going to talk about her father, Vincente Minnelli. According to his biography, Vincente Minnelli: Hollywood’s Dark Dreamer, he lived openly as a gay man in New York City before moving to Hollywood and pursuing his directing career.
Judy Garland was his first wife. Vincente died in 1986, married to Margaretta Lee Anderson. He’s survived through his talented children, including Liza, who’s somewhat of a legend, having played in Cabaret. She will now be participating in the documentary called Broadway: The Next Generation.
Jena Malone – Actress
Whenever Jena Malone's asked to describe her childhood, she says it was awesome. She was conceived after a one-night stand her mother, Deborah Malone, had with her father, Edward Berge, who was married to another woman. Malone was born in Nevada in 1984 and was raised by her mother and her female partner.
Even though they didn’t have a lot of money growing up, they always had each other. Eventually, Malone got into acting and now has a hard-earned $4-million fortune. After all, she’s even played in movies like Hunger Games. In 2020 we saw her on Stardust, and she’s now working on a movie called Porcupine.
Judy Garland – Actress
No matter how many years go by, Judy Garland will always be considered as one of the first gay icons in Hollywood. Even though she herself was straight, it turns out that her father was bi. She was born in 1922 to Francis Avent Frank and Ethel Marion Milne.
Both her parents were performers. They had to relocate from Minnesota to California in 1926 after rumors regarding her dad’s orientation went public. In turn, Garland became a star. Before she passed away in 1969, she had played in films like The Wizard of Oz, and A Star Is Born.
Jay-Z – Rapper, Producer & Businessman
It must have taken a great deal of courage for Gloria Carter to come out to her son, Jay-Z. When she did, however, in 2017, he accepted her with open arms. In turn, they even made a song together called Smile, part of his 4:44 album, which was released the same year.
According to what Jay-Z said in his interview on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, she was quite hesitant when she told him. Eventually, her coming out only brought them closer together. After all, Jay-Z is a dad now himself, having had three children with Beyonce.
O. J. Simpson – Former Professional Football Player
O. J. Simpson’s story is quite well-known given his past and current status. He started as an NFL MVP with the Buffalo Bills and wound up a convict, charged for multiple felonies, including armed robbery. His childhood wasn’t ideal either. His father had abandoned his family and was working as a drag queen in San Francisco.
Nevertheless, they reunited and patched things up once Simpson was grown up. According to the Sportscasting website, his dad was there while he was being inducted at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. He passed away in 1986 from HIV. Simpson was released in 2017 and now lives in Nevada.
Jennifer Grey – Actress
Most of the time, it’s the parents who feel proud of their children rather than it being the other way around. However, in the case of Grey’s family, it was Jennifer who was proud of her father, Joel, when he came out for being gay.
Joel Grey was married to Jo Wilder from 1958 until 1982, and they had two children together. Long after they divorced, Joel found the courage to come out publicly, and he was instantly accepted by his fans and family alike. In the meantime, his daughter Jennifer is now working on a film project to do with Dirty Dancing.
Anne Heche – Actress
Both Anne Heche and her mother, Nancy, have been quite open about their upbringing. After all, the patriarch of their family, Donald, died of AIDS in 1983. He lived his life in denial about his orientation, and according to Anne herself, he even went as far as to abuse her on occasion.
They've put their dark past behind them now. Anne has become quite a successful actress. She’s even famously been in a relationship with a woman, too, with Ellen DeGeneres in the late ‘90s. Anne is now in her 50s and will be playing in a film called Thirteen Minutes.
Daniela Sea – Actor
Daniela Sea probably has one of the most unique family backgrounds on this list. To start off, Daniela is part of the LGTBQI+ community, identifying as non-binary and using they/them pronouns. Their father came out too when Sea was still a child, and in turn, broke his marriage. However, they’ve always had a good relationship.
When Sea’s career started, they got a role on The L Word series, playing Max. The show ended in 2009. Sea has since played on movies like The Dead Man Living. They haven’t undertaken any acting projects in a while but are incredibly surprisingly on social media.
Joely Richardson – Actress
She was born in 1965 to Vanessa Redgrave and Tony Richardson. Both her parents were involved with the movie industry, so it was somewhat inevitable for Joely Richardson to do so as well. In 1967, when she was 2 years old, their family broke up.
Even though he tried concealing it for as long as possible, Tony Richardson came out as bi once he contracted HIV. The illness eventually took his life in 1991. Joely has always had fondness for her dad in spite of their story. She’ll now be playing on The Los Girls movie.
Andy Richter – Comedian & Writer
We’ve known him as Conan O’Brien’s sidekick. After all, Andy Richter has been writing, acting, and generally working for the Conan show since 2010. However, hardly ever do we get a look inside his private life. It turns out that his father came out as gay and left his mother when Andy was 4 years old.
He has not shied away from talking about his past, as he has on many occasions. He recently saw his marriage come to an end, too, as he got divorced from his long-time wife, Sarah Thyre in 2019, after having had two children together. They were married since 1994.
Mary Shelley – Author
Shelley was born in 1797 to Mary Wollstonecraft and her father, Percy Bysshe Shelley, in London. We can’t know with certainty, given that both Mary Shelley and her mother have passed away centuries ago. They were both well-known philosophers and authors. Unfortunately, her mother passed away less than 2 weeks after Shelley’s birth.
She had written books like Mary: A Fiction, which had to do about a lady’s romantic relationship both with a man and with a woman. Needless to say, that was quite a shocker back then. In turn, Shelley became an author too, creating one of the first sci-fi novels out there, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.
Alison Bechdel – Cartoonist
Part of the reason why Alison Bechdel has always been so open about her own orientation was to contradict her father's choices. She was born in Pennsylvania in 1960 to Bruce, an army vet, and Helen, a teacher. According to Bechdel, her father lived his life in the closet.
When she came out at the age of 19, of course, it was a shock to her family. Four months after the incident, her father tragically passed away. Nevertheless, she has since decided to live her life being proud of all her identities. She’s a cartoonist and an author, who wrote books like Are You My Mother?.
Lynn Redgrave – Actress
It’s safe to say that the filmmaking industry would be looking a lot different today had it not been for Lynn Redgrave’s famous father’s contribution to it. Lynn was born in 1943 to Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson. Despite him being bi, he chose to hide it, to have a fruitful career, which he did.
After his death, when Lynn’s brother released the Michael Redgrave: My Father documentary film, he talked in detail about his choice to keep it a secret. Nevertheless, Lynn g
rew up to have quite the stunning acting career, playing in movies like Shine and Gods and Monsters. She passed away at 67 in 2010.
Dorothy Dandridge – Actress
We know Dorothy Dandridge for having played in legendary movies like Carmen Jones and Porgy and Bes. Most of us don’t realize how unconditional her upbringing was, especially keeping in mind that she was born in 1922. Her mother, Ruby Dandridge, divorced her father, Cyril, the same year she was born.
In turn, she started living with her partner, Geneva Williams, who was apparently a bit strict on the children. Nevertheless, Dorothy grew up to be one of the greatest actresses of her generation. She passed away incredibly young, at the age of 42, in 1965.
Natasha Richardson – Actress
In fairness, we’ve already gone over the story of Natasha Richardson’s parents while talking about her sister, Joely. However, it’s still interesting to see how great of a relationship Natasha had with her father, Tony Richardson, as she had even helped him raise money for AIDS-related causes.
The illness took her dad’s life in 1991. Natasha survived him and became quite the actress too, playing in films like Parent Trap and Asylum. Sadly, she had a slip and fall accident while practicing skiing in 2009 and suffered a lethal epidural hematoma, which took her life. Her last project was The Wildest Dream documentary.
Rebecca Walker – Writer
This may not come as a surprise to some, as both Rebecca Walker and her mother, Alice, are still alive and quite successful in their fields, but it turns out that Alice Walker is bi! In fact, she’s gone as far as to say that she had a brief relationship with Tracy Chapman, the singer of Fast Car.
Rebecca is a writer and a feminist much like her mother. The last book she has published so far was in 2013, titled Adé: A Love Story. She’ll reportedly be an executive producer on the upcoming The Color Purple film adaptation of her mother’s book.
Nicole Bobek – Former Figure Skater & Circus Performer
She got famous as a figure skater in the ‘90s; however, these days, Nicole Bobek is apparently performing at a circus, at least according to her Twitter account. She was raised solely by her mother, Jana, and her girlfriend Joyce. Bobek has never actually met her biological father.
Nevertheless, she accomplished great things as a figure skater, even winning the U.S. Championship in 1995! She later struggled with substance abuse, and eventually withdrew herself from the spotlight. She’s doing better now, and has been married to Pedro Santos Leal since 2017.
Joe Valentine – Former Professional Baseball Pitcher
He may have grown up without ever meeting his father, but he had two wonderful and caring mothers as compensation. Joe Valentine used to a pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds in the ‘00s, up until 2005. That same year he had a lengthy interview with a newspaper, sharing some information about his life growing up.
According to the website called Outsports, Valentine loves both his mothers, Deb Valentine and Doreen Price equally and feels quite fortunate for having them. In fact, he also mentioned that he sees no difference when compared to a more traditional family. He reportedly grew up in Long Island, New York.
Corin Redgrave – Actor
We’ve already gone through how Michael Redgrave eventually came out as bi, but what’s stunning about his relationship with his son, Corin, is that he helped him with his coming out. He helped him write his biography in the ‘80s when Corin was in his 40s.
Corin passed away at the age of 70 in 2010. He was married to Kika Markham from 1985 up until the time of his death. Before that, he was able to play in some of the most memorable films like A Man for All Seasons, Excalibur, and Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Kaitlin Colombo – Stand-up Comedian
She’s a stand-up comedian, and much like most of her co-workers, she often talks about her family. However, what’s worth mentioning about Kaitlin Colombo is that she was raised by her mother, who’s a lesbian, and her father, who’s gay. She got her 5 minutes of stardom when she took part in The Last Comedian Standing competition in 2006.
Colombo has since started her own website and has been advocating for LGBTQI+ rights. According to her website, she has some shows scheduled for the future. She often talks about her family in her0 performances, parts of which she has uploaded on her YouTube channel.
Robert De Niro – Actor
When Robert De Niro was less than three years old, his mother and father split up. Given his young age, he could hardly grasp the reasoning behind this sudden change. But once he grew older, he was able to understand it fully. His father, also named Robert De Niro, lived a big part of his life struggling with his identity.
After his death, in 1993, Robert found his dad’s journals. According to the Guardian, they were filled with his so-called demons. In 2014, De Niro made a documentary about his father, Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro, Sr. He’s currently working on a film called Wash Me in the River.
Charles I of England – King
Charles I ruled over Great Britain and Ireland until he was executed for treason in 1649. His father was the great James IV and I who inherited the throne from 1603 until his death. He was married to Anne of Denmark and had eight children throughout his life.
Despite his large number of children, James IV and I’s orientation remains a mystery. That’s simply because he had close relationships with all his male courtiers. While some historians argue that they were not romantic, others say the opposite. Nevertheless, Charles I too had many children, including Charles II, who was the King of Scotland.
