One of the consequences of living life to the fullest is that you can get yourself in a pickle from time to time. The hugely talented celebs on our list may have an immortal legacy, but make no mistake: their bodies are as fragile as anyone else's. And over the years, they've been through some perilous and life-altering experiences.

Find out if your favorite superstar has ever looked death straight in the eyes and how they managed to get out of the situation. From Emilia Clarke to Ozzy Osbourne, let's take a closer look at those moments in time during which tragedy (almost) robbed us of a star.

Emilia Clarke - Game of Thrones Aftermath

You know Emilia Clarke for her role as Daenerys Targaryen, one of the main characters of the hugely popular TV series Game of Thrones. But did you know that, while playing the dragon princess, Clarke was submitted to not one but two life-saving emergency surgeries?

She suffered a life-threatening aneurysm in 2011 and another two years later, and she's admitted that, at one point, she couldn't even remember her name! Fortunately, she overcame that horrible experience and is now safe and sound, working on the upcoming animated film The Amazing Maurice.

Tracy Morgan - Six Vehicle Car Crash

The hilarious actor/comedian Tracy Morgan is one of the stars of the Eddie Murphy movie Coming 2 America, but not everything about his recent past is a laughing matter. In 2014, he was involved in a six-vehicle car accident that left him in a coma and resulted in his friend James McNair's death.

Morgan, McNair, and six others were in a limousine bus when the driver failed to spot the slow-moving traffic ahead. Morgan was able to survive miraculously and has since recalled the near-fatal experience on Twitter. In 2019, he honored his late friend and thanked his family and close circle for their support.

Travis Barker - Airport Take-Off

Travis Barker, the drummer of rock act Blink-182, is a very lucky man. In 2008, he and five others traveled back to California after performing live at Five Points, South Carolina. It was then that the Learjet 60 plane they were on crashed violently during take-off.

Pictures of the wrecked plane can be seen online, and they're so shocking it's almost unbelievable that Barker is still alive. The Blink-182 drummer and his disc-jockey friend Adam Goldstein survived the crash, while the four other occupants lost their lives. Miraculously, Barker got away with just second and third-degree burns.

Sharon Stone - San Francisco Home

You don't need to look twice at the brilliant and gorgeous actress Sharon Stone to see a very healthy woman. But looks are sometimes deceiving. In 2001, Stone was resting in her San Francisco home when, out of nowhere, she suffered a lightning-bolt-like stroke that almost cost her her life.

In a recent interview, Stone has admitted that the event took a heavy toll on her life at all levels, even upending her marriage! Fortunately, she's fully overcome the scare by now, and she's been working steadily since. She's set to star in the drama/romance movie What About Love in 2022.

Lamar Odom - Nevada Cathouse

When you get to the very top, like the former NBA superstar Lamar Odom did, you need to be very careful not to hit rock bottom. A man who likes to live life to the fullest, Odom was involved in a near-fatal accident in 2015, when he overdosed while having (too much) fun at a Nevada cathouse.

It wasn't Odom's best moment by a stretch, but the former athlete has somehow managed to escape unscathed. To this day, Odom is still dealing with addiction issues. In his memoir book, published in 2019, Odom admitted that he's spent around $100 million on drugs and slept with more than 2,000 women!

Amy Schumer - Surfing Accident

The hilarious Amy Schumer is known for her terrific movies and stand-up specials, but she was also an athlete back when she was studying in high school. She practiced volleyball and loved surfing. And the latter was in the origin of a nasty accident that nearly cost her her life...

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Schumer recalled a surfing accident that forced her to take a whopping three layers of 41 stitches on her leg. To this day, she still has a nasty scar, and she's thankful to the kind stranger who helped her stay alive by keeping her leg from bleeding out too fast.

Eminem - Christmas 2007

On the Christmas of 2007, Eminem was one of the world's most famous rappers. But Santa brought him a very undesirable present: a drug addiction. Eminem nearly died in an overdose that caused him to reconsider his personal and professional life.

Two years later, he released the album Relapse and admitted that he was forced to "re-learn" how to rap in the aftermath of the near-fatal accident. One year later, Eminem released yet another record, Recovery. It was a perfectly-titled work of art that symbolized the beginning of a sobriety period for the artist that has lasted over 12 years.

Elizabeth Taylor - Back Surgery

The late Elizabeth Taylor is considered one of the greatest female screen legends of all time, and her near-death experience is as iconic as her career. During a back surgery in 1962, medical complications caused her heart to stop for a whopping five minutes, and the doctors even declared her clinically dead!

Somehow, Taylor came back to life, and she brought some "news" from the other side. In 1992, she told Oprah Winfrey that she saw a tunnel and her late husband Mike Todd while she was out. Quite appropriately, Taylor's was an unforgettable near-death experience worthy of a classic Hollywood movie.

Stephen King - Afternoon Stroll

You're never 100% safe, not even when you're doing something as simple as taking a stroll around the block. It was the Summer of 1999, and the American writer Stephen King was enjoying an afternoon walk when a high-speed minivan ran into him. He was taken to the hospital, where he remained unconscious for a while.

According to King, the doctors debated whether they should amputate his leg or not. Fortunately, King was able to keep his leg, and he's recovered completely over the course of the past 22 years. However, the minivan driver wasn't as fortunate and ended up committing suicide not long after.

Leonardo DiCaprio - Scuba Diving in Galapagos

While scuba diving in the Galapagos Islands in 2016, actor Leonardo DiCaprio ran out of air in his oxygen tank and found himself in a life-threatening situation. He was distracted by the sea animals and completely lost track of time; fortunately, another great Hollywood actor was around to save his life!

This bombshell of a story was shared with talk-show host Graham Norton by DiCaprio's savior, none other than Edward Norton! It sure looks like something straight out of a great movie, but it was an all-too-real and terrifying experience that almost cost us one of the best actors of our generation.

Johnny Depp - Plane Engine Stop

In 2011, the American actor Johnny Depp was flying in a private plane alongside the director Bruce Robinson. It was then the two friends got a real scare when they heard the plane's engine suddenly stop. A moment of stressful silence followed up, and the two show-biz buddies thought for a second they were going to die.

Fortunately, the engine was back on shortly after, and Depp and Robinson made it all the way through safe and sound. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Depp admitted that the life-threatening scare was followed by a moment of hysterical laughter, probably caused by an intense feeling of relief.

George Clooney - Motorcycle Accident

In 2018, the American actor George Clooney was enjoying life; while filming the Channel 4 miniseries Catch 22 on the beautiful Italian island of Sardinia, he decided to take a break and enjoy a nice motorcycle ride. It was then he collided with a Mercedes that split his helmet in half and flipped him through the air.

Luckily, the Ocean's 11 star landed on his knees and was able to survive the crash. In an interview with The Independent, Clooney admitted that he "got lucky" and that his wife Amal no longer allows him to ride motorcycles---it's probably for the best!

Jane Seymour - Film Set

The former Bond Girl Jane Seymour admitted that her near-death experience was an "awakening" for her. The bombshell actress was working on the 1988 movie Onassis: The Richest Man in the World when an on-set injection caused her to go into anaphylactic shock. The reason? The antibiotics were injected into her vein, not her muscle.

The terrifying experience almost cost us one of the best English actresses of the past 50 years, but it proved to be life-changing for Seymour. She told the press she calmly "watched" while the nurses tried to revive her and that she's been aware of her life priorities ever since: the love you share and the difference you make.

50 Cent - Shot Nine Times

It's arguably the best-known near-death experience on the list because it actually helped launch 50 Cent's successful musical career. In 2000, the rapper was in a friend's car when a man called Darryl Baum allegedly shot him nine times, both on his body and his face!

The recovery was tough for 50 Cent, but it came with a plus: the near-fatal experience caused him to reconsider his attitude towards life and business. The bullet that hit him in the face left him with a speech slur that actually allowed him to develop a unique, mumbling rapping style.

Harrison Ford - Emergency Landing

The American actor Harrison Ford loves to fly planes and helicopters, but his aviation adventures have proven to be quite costly. He was involved in three flight accidents over the years, with the most dangerous being a 2015 golf course emergency landing!

Somehow, Ford survived unscathed every single time. Add a couple of on-set injuries, and you may start to realize why the actor was once called "Mr. Risky." Shortly after his troubling 2015 emergency landing, Ford told the press he was "feeling good" and back to playing tennis, proving to be a real-life action hero!

Liam Hemsworth - Surfing Accident

The hunky The Hunger Games superstar Liam Hemsworth was a semi-professional surfer while growing up, and one of his after-school training sessions almost ended in disaster. He got his leg rope wrapped around his body and was left stuck under the water, nearly drowning.

Fortunately, he was able to survive and went on to become a major Hollywood actor. Interestingly enough, Liam's brother Chris was also involved in a near-fatal surfing accident: in 2018, the Avengers: Endgame actor was surfing in Canada when he hit a rock and got "a little heavy for a minute."

Christie Brinkley - Helicopter Crash

The American model/entrepreneur Christie Brinkley was traveling in a helicopter with five other people when they suddenly crashed into the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. At the time, Brinkley was married to the singer Billy Joel, with whom she had an 8-year-old daughter.

In an interview with People magazine, Brinkley recalled that all she could think about during the crash was her young daughter. Fortunately for the model, everyone aboard the helicopter was miraculously able to survive. Brinkley's admitted that she'd felt "blessed" for being alive ever since. She recalled the accident in a recent Instagram post, in which she mentioned that "each day is a gift."

Gerard Butler - Filming Chasing Mavericks

In 2012, the Scottish actor Gerard Butler was shooting the movie Chasing Mavericks in Northern California. He was having a rough afternoon after spending almost six hours filming in the freezing water. It was then that the exhausted actor was surprised by a two-wave hold-down that pulled him underwater and dragged him across a reef.

He shared the near-fatal experience on The Graham Norton Show and pointed out that it was "a pretty close call." He lost his surfing board and was left spinning under the water. It was a pretty scary moment, especially considering Butler is, admittedly, "not a big-wave surfer." Who said being an actor was easy?

Chevy Chase - Filming Modern Problems

The legendary Hollywood actor Chevy Chase was left in literal shock in 1981 after suffering a never-seen-before on-set accident. He was filming the movie Modern Problems when a "modern problem" involving a short-circuited suit with lights caused him to be electrocuted!

It was a prop-related calamity that almost cost us the great Chevy Chase. Fortunately, the National Lampoon actor quickly recovered from the shock after losing consciousness for a brief instant. The strangest thing is that, for a while, the Modern Problems crew mistook Chase's screams for a joke, leaving the lights on his suit on.

Kanye West - Car Accident

Before becoming a household musician/producer, the multitalented Kanye West almost died from a car crash. The accident happened in 2002 and made him reconsider his life legacy. The experience inspired West to write his debut album and kickstart a hugely successful musical career.

Deemed by many (including himself) as a musical genius, West's near-death experience is still on his mind today. In an interview with USA Today, West has admitted that almost dying has motivated him to live life to the fullest, persuading him to work hard in the studio, as if every day was possibly his last.

Gary Busey - Motorcycle Accident

The American actor Gary Busey is a lucky, lucky man. In December 1988, he decided to go for a motorcycle ride in the city but forgot to wear a helmet. That same day, he was involved in a near-fatal motorcycle crash that left him with permanent brain damage and a fractured skull.

Speaking of the accident, Busey recalled that some doctors believed he would not make it, but the character actor ended up making an impressive recovery. Riding motorcycles is extremely dangerous, especially if you're not doing it safely: riders who don't wear a helmet are 40% more likely to suffer a fatal head injury.

Sandra Bullock - Jet Landing

At the turn of the millennium, the gorgeous Sandra Bullock was one of the world's best-known actresses. She was then involved in a complicated jet landing that Bullock later described as a "freak accident," but that could've cost her her life!

The whole calamity was originated by a major December blizzard that caused Bullock's plane to skid upon landing. None of the passengers (including Bullock's former boyfriend Bob Schneider) were hurt, but the plane was left in a bad state: the nose landing gear was smashed off, and considerable damage was done to both wings.

Joaquin Phoenix - Car Crash

The talented American actor Joaquin Phoenix is no stranger to death. Besides having lost his older brother River to a tragic overdose in 1993, he was involved in a near-fatal accident in 2006. A brake failure caused his car to spin out of control, flip, and crash into another vehicle.

Fortunately, the German-born director Werner Herzog lived nearby and was one of the first to make it to the scene. Phoenix later described that hearing Herzog's calming voice was like a harbinger that everything would be okay. The actor was able to survive and make some great movies, including Her, The Master, and Joker.

Gloria Estefan - Bus Accident

The Cuban-American singer/actress Gloria Estefan is a very lucky girl. In 1990, she was involved in a major accident when a tractor hit her touring bus. She was traveling with the entourage of her Cuts Both Ways live tour and ended up breaking her back.

The accident took a heavy toll on Estefan's body, who was saved by emergency surgery. She now has to live with implanted titanium rods on her spine. Still, it sure beats the alternatives: back-breaking accidents can lead to death, permanent nerve damage, and even leave you permanently paralyzed.

Burt Reynolds - Filming City Heat

In the mid-'80s, the legendary late American actor Burt Reynolds was filming the action/comedy flick City Heat when he decided to make a sudden life change. At the time, he was suffering from addiction to prescription drugs, consuming as many as 50 sleeping pills a day! But when he decided to quit the pills, his body resented it deeply.

We're not trying to support sleeping pill consumption, but it's fair to say Reynolds shouldn't have quitted so suddenly. The blunt change caused him to slip into a coma that almost cost him his life. While unconscious, Reynolds claims to have witnessed his doctors trying to revive him in a typical out-of-body near-death experience.

Johnny Cash - Emergency Bypass

The late American singer Johnny Cash is one of country music's ultimate legends. He lived a full life, reaching the age of 71, but he could've been gone a good 15 years too soon... In 1988, he was rushed to the hospital for an emergency double coronary bypass and was simultaneously affected by pneumonia.

The combination of the two maladies proved nearly fatal for the legendary country superstar, who was lucky enough to make it alive. In a typical Johnny Cash fashion, he decided to make the most out of the experience and decided to see the world in a new, more positive light.

Martin Lawrence - Heatstroke

There's almost nothing the multitalented comedian/actor/host/producer Martin Lawrence can't do, except maybe for a Rocky impression... In 1999, he was jogging with multiple layers of clothing in a boxer's fashion when he collapsed due to heatstroke. He was in a coma for about three days.

Everybody loves a sunny day, but it's important to be aware that excessive heat can literally kill you. According to The Journal of Emergency Medicine, heatstroke is responsible for about 600 deaths in the United States every year. Fortunately for Lawrence, the risk of death in exercise-related heatstrokes is less than 5%.

Isla Fisher - Filming Now You See Me

Looking for a special near-death celeb experience? This is it. You can actually see the actress Isla Fisher nearly die while filming the Houdini-inspired movie Now You See Me. After all, her stressful close-call moment even made it to the final edit and can be watched in its entirety.

A determined performer, Fisher still likes to do her own stunts, regardless of what happened on Now You See Me's water tank scene. In front of a baffled filming crew, Fisher spent a good two-and-a-half-minutes without breathing while struggling to free herself from a set of chains. Everybody watching thought she was acting brilliantly, not knowing she was nearly drowning.

George Foreman - Exhaustion & Heatstroke

The legendary boxer George Foreman was involved in a near-death experience in 1977, and the moment changed his life forever. He was competing against Jimmy Young in Puerto Rico when he collapsed due to exhaustion and heatstroke. While out, he had a near-divine out-of-body experience.

The experience motivated Foreman to quit boxing, find the love of God, and make a change for the better in his life. He became a minister and made a habit of visiting prisons and hospitals in the hope of inspiring others to live a kinder life. That heavy 1977 blow almost killed him but also made him a more peaceful man.

Ozzy Osbourne - ATV Accident

ATVs, also known as quads or four-wheelers, can look kind of safe... But as the legendary rockstar Ozzy Osbourne will tell you, they're not! Double the wheels don't make for double the safety, and Ozzy was nearly killed in 2003 after crashing his ATV bike.

The accident caused him to fall into a several-day coma and resulted in fractures to his ribs and collarbone. The Black Sabbath singer was able to make a recovery and has hopefully never got back on the top of a four-wheeler. Speaking of his near-death experience, Ozzy mentioned he saw a white light while unconscious.
